Quarterly Events

BioScholars hosts three main types of events each quarter: general body meetings (GBMs), academic events, and social events. Read more about each below.

General Body Meetings

BioScholars hosts quarterly GBMs for all members to gather and discuss upcoming events. We often try to make GBMs interactive and fun for members so that you get to know the BioScholars community. We respect everyone’s time so we aim to keep these GBMs to an hour in length.

Academic Events

Throughout the quarter, BioScholars organizes multiple events for members to enrich their academic lives. These include lab tours, workshops, and tea times with professors, an event exclusive to BioScholars.

Lab Tours

Members can sign up to tour one of UCSD’s many research labs. These tours are led by either post-doctorate researchers, PhD students, or the PIs themselves. They are a great opportunity to gain exposure to academic research and to ask questions about the cutting-edge research being done on campus.

Workshops

At our workshops, BioScholars invites an array of guest speakers to talk about a variety of helpful topics. Some of the workshops we’ve held in the past include meditation events, How to Maintain a 3.7, and Studying Abroad as a Biology Major.

Tea Time with Faculty

Tea times with faculty are one of BioScholars’ most popular events. Refreshments and snacks are provided as professors and researchers sit around a table and engage in conversation about school, research, or anything else that comes to mind. These events are very intimate and are limited to a few spots, so they are a great opportunity to get to know UCSD’s esteemed faculty.

Volunteer Events

BioScholars also provides members the opportunity to give back to the San Diego community, hosting volunteer events and partnering with all kinds of organizations. Some of the volunteer events we’ve hosted in the past include beach cleanups, habitat restoration events, and group excursions to fulfill shifts at the San Diego Food Bank.

Social Events

Our social events are spaces where members can mingle and build lasting friendships. Social events allow for members to spend quality time with their fellow peers and take a well-earned break from the studious academic rigor of their current classload. We host hikes, board game nights, movie nights, and more. No matter what your hobbies are, BioScholars has an event for you to enjoy.
